Park Street Cemetery Walk

Originally known as the ‘Great Christian Burial Ground’, when it was set up in 1767 as an alternative to the graveyard in St. John’s Church, Park Street Cemetery serves as a reminder of the city’s compelling British past. While the St John’s cemetery was the last resting place of the city’s founding father, Job Charnock, and his successors, the Park Street Cemetery documented the deaths   of the Christian citizenry in the later days of the Kolkata of the Raj. Buried here too were those who were linked to the British East India Company, British soldiers, administrators, and their families. It’s quite possible that it also witnessed some ceremonial military farewells to senior officers who had passed into the next life. The last burials took place in the 1830s. One of Kolkata’s popular tourist attractions, it is one of the largest colonial cemeteries of its kind.

  • Stepping back in time in Kolkata’s historic past
  • Rediscovering the hidden gems of the city’s Raj era
  • Its interesting to note the decorative elements and inscriptions of the gravestones and tombs here

The sombre grounds of Park Street Cemetery, one of the world's oldest non-church cemeteries, tell the stories of the 1600+ British soldiers, administrators, and their families buried on Indian soil. This is a walk that gives you a new perspective on British-era Kolkata in a serene, peaceful landscape away from the hustle and bustle of the present-day city.
