Shola Flower Making With An Artist From Shantiketan

During the Pujas you will find the idols are richly ornamented in jewellery made from Shola. This traditional Bengali art form has been preserved for generations. Also known as Indian cork, shola is the soft, porous, and lightweight core of the Shola stem, an aquatic plant; it is surprisingly durable. If stored well, items can stay with you for a few years! Shola artists use sharp tools to make simple and intricate designs. Throughout Bengal you will find clusters of Shola ornament makers doing brisk business all year round for some function or event in the lives of Bengali families.

  • Learning the delicate art of shola carving
  • Making a special item for oneself under expert guidance
  • Discovering a new skill

Under the guidance of an experienced multigenerational artist from Shantiniketan, we will learn how to carve intricate flowers, or any form of decoration of your choice, in the Shola stem. We will start with a brief introduction of the artist, his background and the materials/tools we will be using. The artist will demonstrate how to make the Shola flowers, after which we will make a few Shola flowers like chrysanthemums and lilies. They look gorgeous once done! There is an option to do a quicker version of this workshop within 60 mins where the artist can pre-prepare some of the elements of the flower, if pressed for time.
