Dalhousie Square Walk

Formerly known as Dalhousie Square, Benoy-Badal-Dinesh Bagh (named after three Indian nationalists killed in the rebellion) , is the heart of Kolkata’s bustling business and administrative centre.  Despite the contemporary veneer of the district, it bristles with colonial days vibe, crowded as it is with the 55 Raj-era landmarks, known as the “Dalhousie Square Heritage Zone” including the Town Hall, the Writers’ Building, classical-style St. John’s Church — and the iconic Eden Gardens, one of the world’s largest cricket grounds.  In the 18th and 19th centuries, Dalhousie Square was Calcutta’s financial, social, and political hub. Dalhousie Square with its buildings dating from 1695 and 1947, is one of the last of South Asia’s few surviving colonial centers; its uniqueness in India lies in the fact that much of its peripheral environment remains intact.

  • Walking in the footsteps of Kolkata’s Dalhousie era
  • Finding reflections of the memories of a dark chapter of history
  • Savoring the culinary offerings of the neighbourhood

Once the commercial and political centre of British India, this area was named after Lord Dalhousie. We will walk through the Dalhousie lanes and hear the stories of the buildings, structures, and artefacts that stand as a testament to a dark era in Indian history. This area is now also known for its delicious and varied street food, which feeds hundreds of office-goers every day! We will also savour some special delicacies on the walk.
