Elephant Poo Paper Making

Elephant Poo Paper was founded by Vijendra and his younger brother Ram Singh back in 2001 when Vijendra literally stumbled on the crazy idea of making paper from elephant dung. This sustainable method of making elephant poo paper is similar to that of making any other handmade paper, with the additional challenge of disinfecting the dung thoroughly. In this process 75% elephant poo along with 25% cotton is added to make it most sustainable paper of earth. It is one of the most regenerative papers in the world.

You’ll be surprised to learn that the Colour of the paper depends on what elephant eat, which in turn depends on the season. From June to September, when elephant eats Jowar (Sorghum) and Bajra (Pearl Millet), the paper is darker in the colour than the rest of the year when they eat sugarcane.

It's 100% natural, chemical-free, and doesn't require a single tree to be cut down.

  • Witnessing an amazing transition from poo to paper
  • A hands-on opportunity to participate in the process
  • Learning about this wonderful eco-friendly sustainable way of making paper

You will be meet at your hotel and escorted to the family home of the artisans involved in transforming elephant poo into eco-friendly paper. You will be welcomed by them in the traditional way guests are greeted.

You will share the story of how this amazing transition takes place.

Poo collection takes place from the elephant village in Amber. It is then washed in water and then cooked 4-5 hours in salty water to make it soft and pliable.  The poo is then dried and sorted to remove waste. Pulping takes place next by beating the cotton in the Hollander beater for about 04 hours. The sheets are then placed on a muslin cloth and then sheets are compressed and dried completely in the shade. Lastly the sheets are passed back and forth between the rollers in a process called calendaring. The sheets are finally smooth and writable, and ready to be shipped to their destinations.

You will then witness the process of the paper making from the 5th step (Pulping by beating the cotton in the Hollander beater) to the finish. Aprons well be provided to guests before it starts. With the help of family, you will learn how to make your own paper, which will be delivered to your hotel the next day after drying if they are in Jaipur.  You can also see the finished products and shop for diaries and notebooks if you wish. Tea and snacks will be served at the end of the session. If the group comprises 40 people, then it will be divided into two teams of 20 each.
