Your hostess hails from the Anglo- Indian community, tracing its history back to the Portuguese who ruled Cochin for over 160 years and were the first European settlers in India. Kerala still retains the impact of those cultural influences. This tour will introduce you to these traditions this family maintains to this day. Though Kerala cuisine is traditionally vegetarian, the interaction with different settlers resulted in the locals also adopting some of their culinary traditions. Kerala favourites such as vindaloo, grilled sardines, Kerala fish curry, crumb chops, ball curry, coconut rice, etc all have their origin in Portuguese food culture. The seafarers also brought with them vegetables, fruits and cash crops, which became an integral part of Kerala cuisine; a case in point is Tapioca (cassava), of which there are now many preparations. Kerala, which is known as the “Land of Spices” and Cochin which is called “Queen of the Arabian Sea”, is where the spices and seafood meet.
Get ready for a very interesting trip as one of the family members will conduct the Anglo-Indian culinary experience in their home. Over a welcome drink, you will get to know a little about each other. Oscar and his family are excellent hosts and you are sure to enjoy one of them showcase their skills in the kitchen; you can even participate in the preparations, while all the while learning many things about the history, culture and culinary heritage of the community. Jeanette Dale's family has successfully hosted Dinners/Lunches, 'a guest at home for dinner' concept for the Americans and other nationalities, since 2014. If requested a visit to the local market can also be organized if the group is small. Guests can accompany one of the members and enjoy the cultural experience of procuring the items needed for cooking.
