The spacious garden with green sprawling lawn and veranda of this over 60-year-old home offers the perfect setting for a shared Syrian Christian lunch. The cooking demo is the perfect introduction to one of the more unique aspects of Kerala’s culinary heritage, which is to put it mildly just amazing for its variety and palate-seducing properties.
It was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ who brought Christianity to the shores of Kerala. This was St Thomas, of Christ’s ‘doubting Thomas ‘ fame who arrived here in AD 52; the followers of the saint are known as Syrian Christians, and with them entered western culinary influences in Kerala's culinary order, that are prevalent to this day.
Amongst the most traditional dishes of Kerala's Indian Christians are Mappas, Stew, Molee, Roasts and Appams; Kuzhalappam and Achappam are its most popular snacks. Syrian Christian cuisine also has nuances of Portuguese food. Roast meat, a popular dish, follows a less elaborate form of cooking in Syrian Christian in Kerala. Kozhi Pidi Chicken Curry is a popular one-pot meal served with biryani; pidi, the rice flour dumplings are cooked along with the chicken as it gets more tender. There is a beef version to this as well. Kuzhalappam is inspired by Sicily’s cannoli. Another intriguing connection waiting to be explored!!! Cabbage Thoran or stir fry is a signature Kerala dish and Fish Moli, a fish curry in coconut milk.
This experience is surely going to be of the Mind-filling experiences of witnessing the cooking demonstration of an authentic Kerala-style lunch.
