Carnatic music, or what we know as karnataka sangitam is one of the two styles of Indian classical music; the other is Hindustani music. The present form of Carnatic music is based on historical developments that can be traced to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries C.E. As opposed to Hindustani music, the main emphasis in Carnatic music is on vocal music; most compositions are written to be sung, and even when played on instruments, they are meant to be performed in gayaki (singing) style. As in all art forms in Indian culture, Carnatic music too is believed to have a divine origin, from the Devas and Devis, but what is generally accepted is that natural origins of music were an important factor in its development.
Stories and live singing, best of both worlds - Art and HistoryA performing Carnatic Vocalist as StorytellerVisit to historic Hindu templesWitness the local economy supported by the Temples and the way of life of the locals
A performing Vocalist from the Carnatic tradition of South India will lead this tour. Along the way, you will learn about the history, mythology and rituals associated with the temple. You have a real treat in store as the singer will regale you with traditional Carnatic songs (in Tamil, which will then be translated into English) associated with the temple. Some of these songs/hymns are nearly 1,200 yrs. old and are still rendered during music concerts. The live rendition of songs/hymns, the tinkling of the temple bell, the smell of incense and the chanting of prayers by devotees, all adds to the storytelling experience. The energy and buzz have to be experienced to understand why Chennai was made part of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. A musical storytelling treat is guaranteed!
